Application of Stem Cells Transplants to Induce the Recovery of Multiple Sclerosis

Recent clinical research has shown that high-dose immunosuppressive therapy immediately followed by transplantation of an individual’s blood-forming stem cells induces recovery of multiple sclerosis (MS). Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease where the central nervous system is attacked by the immune system. After receiving the autologous hematopoietic and high-dose immunosuppressive therapy treatment for five years, 69 % of patients did not experience any form of disability or relapse of multiple sclerosis symptoms. Other research projects show that the available drugs used to treat MS have low success rates.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) sponsored the HALT-MS trial. Further studies show that one-time HDIT/HCT treatment may be more efficient and appropriate than long-term treatment of the disease. MS symptoms may include; fatigue, speech and motor difficulties, weakness, and chronic pain. If the disease remains untreated, it worsens or shifts to a progressive form. Results from the study show that treatment of MS for five years using HDIT/HCT leads to improved physical capabilities and recovery of mobility.
